Dear Editor,

Your editorial of February 16 entitled, "Diesel Emissions Due For Reduction" fails to inform readers of the fact dramatic reductions in diesel emissions began in June of 2006 as a result of new federal regulations mandating virtually zero-sulfur diesel fuel be sold for all on-road diesel vehicles.  These changes are taking place nationwide, so unlike decisions respecting only one state – these changes will benefit everyone as they will happen everywhere. The proposal to retro-fit diesel engines here is shortsighted in that it will affect fewer than 1 out of 5 diesel vehicles that transit Connecticut .

Millions of taxpayer dollars DO NOT have to be spent on engine retrofits - the "solution" to the diesel issue is here now most and by 2010 will be fully implemented for both on-road and off-road vehicles. With this new diesel fuel working for us right now we are benefiting years in advance of ANY unnecessary proposals to retrofit engines - and the new fuel has to be used in all on-road diesel engines.

Dramatic reductions in sulfur content in diesel fuel herald a new era in clean burning diesel engines unlike any this nation has seen.  These regulatory changes will directly address the particulate matter [pm 2.5] concerns voiced here and around the nation.
